Undrafted Leafs prospect Joseph Duszak is quietly working his way up the Maple Leafs organization, and fast.
Less than 1 year ago, on March 13th to be exact Kyle Dubas signed a 21 year old RH defenseman who led the NCAA in points with 47 in 37 games. Duszak, whom played in 101 games with Mercyhurst University totaled 99 career points (30 goals, 69 assist) and 98 penalty minutes.
The 5’10 185LB New York Native attended Marlies camp in September however with the crowded blueline was assigned to The Newfoundland Growlers of The ECHL. In just 34 games with The defending champion Growlers Duszak again showed his offensive flare with 35 points in 34 games earning himself a call-up to The Toronto Marlies once Rasmus Sandin became a full time Maple Leaf.
Duszak found himself struggling to crack the AHL affiliates bottom 6 however he had registered just 2 points in 8 games.
Fast forward to the Cody Ceci injury and the leafs recall of fellow RH defenseman Timothy Liljegren on February 7th leaving the Marlies without a lot of options on blue line, but yet a huge opportunity for someone like Joseph to finally prove himself to the club and that he did.
In just 7 games since replacing Liljegren on the top pair, Joseph Duszak has recorded 11 points and is a +5 on a rather decimated Marlies club due to injuries and call-ups.
Although it is a short sample size, Joseph Duszak has proven he can rise to the occasion when given the opportunity and is definitely someone to keep an eye on moving forward
