It’s no secret that the majority of Leafs Nation and William Nylander aren’t on good terms, after a hold out for 1/4 of the season and a lack luster performance with The the other 3/4 it is understandable.
However let’s step aside from our anger for a moment and think about what is going on in Nylander’s mind.
Over the course of the holdout a lot of things changed, William was knocked down a peg, he realized where he stood within the organization and that clearly was not where he thought he did.
On a personal level, if you look back prior to last year Nylander and Matthews were inseparable not only off the ice but at times on the ice as well and on a friendship level Matthews and Marner grew closee together while William stayed in Sweden during his holdout and maybe lost that connection he had with The Leafs star center.
Now none of this is an excuse, but in a The world we live in now i am sure Mental Health was a big factor in Why William wasn’t The William we remembered.
Representing Sweden is something William is very proud to do, following in the footsteps of his father and although it can be infuriating to see him leading the World Championship in scoring it should be encouraging as well.
With 8 points in 3 games William has looked like his play making, lethal wrist shot self and that is momentum for him to take into the off season and to focus on instead of his poor NHL season.
Next year is a clean slate, a fresh start, and with a potential mix up of linemates and a confidence boost from the World Championship we may all see the Nylander we used to love.
